During my thru-hike in 2003, the guidebook I used had town maps that were not to scale; instead, the streets were contorted to fit the space available in the book. It was frustrating to walk from one business to another that appeared on the map to be a block apart when in reality they were separated by a mile or more.

I’m intent on having great town maps in App Pages. In the 2008 edition, maps are proportionally scaled, and the width (in miles) of the area covered is at the bottom of the map. Roads, railroads, and rivers have a realistic appearance that is unparalleled in other full-trail guidebooks. Symbols help the user to quickly spot different types of businesses.

Here’s a sample of a 2008 town map:

In 2009, the maps get even better. Many will be enlarged to take up a full page. More information will be right on the maps. There will be maps of more towns. We’ve added symbols for vets, pharmacy, and more.

We need to make space for more and larger town maps. One solution is to eliminate repetitiously listing business names on the map and in the text. That issue was discussed more thoroughly in this posting:

There is also a poll - please let us know what you think of the proposed change.

Look for a sample of one of the new town maps near the end of this month.

Awol I will be going thru Waynesboro today. I will try to check out as much of the map as I have time. I will let you know any changes that may be needed.

In the 2009 edition we will add maps for:

Luray
Chesire
North Adams / Williamstown
Rutland
Stratton
Millinocket

And maybe one or two others if we have space.

The North Woodstock map will be expanded to include more of Lincoln.

This will bring the number of town maps to 30 or more. Nearly all of the maps that were in the 2008 book are larger. As most of you have seen, Hanover and Pearisburg maps are more than twice as large as they were in 2008.

Anyone have opinions about other areas that warrant a town map?
