Some symbols lend themselves to ambiguity. We'll add more description of how/when the symbols will be used in the front matter of the 2009 book, but for now I'll mention a few, so I can be sure we are moving in the right direction.
SHUTTLE:
In 2008 we put this on some motels that were not close to the AT and did pickup/return if you stay with them. Also, we listed it when a place could put you in touch with a shuttle service.
In 2009, the shuttle service will only appear next to a person or business that does shuttle service. If it is a motel, the shuttle service has to be more general than just pickup/return.
INTERNET:
Nearly all hotels will tell you that they have internet access, which usually means that they have wireless if you have a computer. We'll only list internet when they have a computer available.
BOOK (Library):
Last year, libraries usually had both the book symbol and the internet symbol. We'll no longer use the book, because hikers are more likely visiting the library for internet access, and you know they have books (I hope).
HOSTEL/HOTEL
Sometimes the distinction is not too clear. If the place primarily offers private rooms, or is a B&B, it will be listed as a HOTEL. HOSTEL is used when it is a bunkroom or "by donation" stay. Some places that have both choices (for example: Mountain Harbor B&B) will have both symbols.
