I've noticed a new type of laundry soap packaging that will be convenient for hikers - maybe it's been out a while and I'm just noticing. It is liquid soap sealed in tiny one-use packets. They call them "sink packs" because it is marketed to travelers who will wash a small amount of clothes in a sink. I've always used less laundry soap than the box says, even when washing in a machine, so I'm sure one of these packs will be enough to do a "hiker load" in a washer machine.
These packs are sold at Target & Wal-Mart, but hopefully some outfitters and smaller stores along the trail will catch on. It would be a good item to include in maildrops.
The picture shows a pack of three; each packet weighs less than an ounce.
